Original Press ReleaseJust before 1:00 AM this morning an officer with the Willis Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle after viewing a traffic violation.  The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and led police south on IH 45.  Officers saw the suspect throwing items, believed to be some type of narcotic, from the truck as the suspect continued to drive.

During the pursuit the suspect remotely opened and closed the cover over the bed of the truck and would move a boom with a wheel chair on it out over the roadway and at times lowering the wheel chair down so the chair would bounce on the roadway and off the side of the truck.  The wheel chair never dislodged and remained tethered to the boom.

During the chase officers with the Conroe Police Department, Shenandoah Police Department, Department of Public Safety and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office attempted to spike the vehicle’s tires.  At least one of the attempts was successful and three of the four tires were flattened.

The suspect vehicle struck a concrete barrier just south of Woodlands Parkway and came to rest on the outside shoulder of the interstate.  When deputies and officers approached the suspect, the suspect opened the vehicle’s door yelling that he had a gun and yelled “shoot me.”  The suspect reached down retrieving something from under the driver’s seat.  A deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office fired at least three rounds from his pistol striking the suspect in the torso.

The suspect was taken to the Woodlands Hospital by ambulance where he later died.  The suspect is a paralyzed mid-40’s white male.  Attempts are being made to locate a next of kin.

The freeway south bound on IH 45 was closed for several hours with traffic being diverted onto to the service road.  The outer lanes of the freeway have been opened as early morning commuter traffic begins to increase.

The scene investigation will continue into the morning.  Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes, Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers are working together to complete the investigation.

Updated information will be released periodically as new information is available.
